“ Men and Women wanted for a hazardous distributed computing Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. Low wages, bitter false positives, long hours of data crunching, overheating CPU's and GPUs. "Get your circle of people involved. It isn't all about the fastest server farm (though those are important), it is about reaching people and making them a part of something bigger even if they only have a crappy slow machine at home. It is part a public relations outreach as we make people feel a part of something that they will then maybe financially donate to, and/or elect science friendly politicians who will help. I can't wait for my new seti shirt to get here, and remind people that this project is still around after 20 years and hopefully get more people in the tent." - Unixchick https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=83777&postid=1990998

SETI@home Progress report (David Anderson, Project administrator, developer & scientist) Posted: 26 Apr 2019, 19:40:53 UTC - Birdie signal generation - Introduction of "time entropy", a measure of how separated in time the multiplet's signals are - Through machine-learning, making our multiplet scoring algorithm better at finding birdie multiplets (and hence better at finding ET - bug fixes and enhancements https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=84154&postid=1991588

[SETI@home humor] Richard's Universal Solution: "I also had problems accessing this website, with - apparently - the Cloudflare service failing to get me a secure connection and giving me a 'forbidden' plain http connection instead. So I went out to the pub, and it was fine when I got back."

Free-DC: Thanks all for the great response to donations. Happy to say that the total was just over $2700, so I have more than enough for the next 18months or more. After reference from one of the users I'm also looking very closely into a dedicated server (or 2) at a local datacenter. Waiting on some responses on specs. I'd be able to pay for the full year outright easily. More to come https://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php 2019.04.28

Is SETI@home Down ?

Is SETI@home Down? A checklist :

  1. Could it be SETI@home's weekly 3-5 hours long scheduled Tuesday Maintenance Outage ?
  2. Could it be a problem with your ISP or with your own equipments ?
  3. Check the servers' status (if accessible) at https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_server_status.php ...
  4. Is SETI@home unreachable for other users too ? https://www.isitdownrightnow.com/setiathome.berkeley.edu.html ...
  5. Is UC Berkeley having network problems or maintenance ? http://systemstatus.berkeley.edu/
  6. Howl at the Moon and/or Burn your hair (optional).
  7. Check for possible status reports at https://twitter.com/BerkeleySETI
  8. Check for possible status reports at https://www.facebook.com/BerkeleySETI/ ...
  9. A thread (if accessible) where  usually the first signs of panic appear : The Server Issues / Outages Thread - Panic Mode On! ... which is now in its 118th session https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=84983 (the 119th is around the corner)...
  10. The 2nd place of choice if SETI@home is down is The SETI is Down Café Thread https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=8105&sort_style=5&start=0 ...
  11. If BOINC is also down (UC Berkeley being in charge for both projects' servers),  the Seti Refuge Bar and Bistro Wing of Cafe Einstein is the usually the next goto place :  https://einsteinathome.org/content/seti-refuge-bar-bistro-wing-cafe-einstein ...
  12. This active SETI@home Facebook group sometimes nails it:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/317689381579505/ ...
  13. If you're desperate enough, and if the previous suggestions didn't quite work, why not rely on Richard's Maneuver ? Go to the local bar until things eventually settle down one way or the other.

A Multi-Planetary Life - In the words of Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX, "It's important that we attempt to extend the life beyond Earth now. It is the first time in the four-billion-year history of Earth that it's been possible, and that window could be open for a long time - hopefully, it is - or it could be open for a short time. We should err on the side of caution and do something now." https://www.sciencetimes.com/articles/20313/20190417/a-multi-planetary-life.htm

Solving the Fermi paradox without assumptions - Alexander Berezin (Submitted on 27 Mar 2019) This paper suggests that a universal solution to the Fermi paradox exists and can be derived directly from the definition of life and/or intelligence, therefore eliminating the need for any questionable assumptions and even for the anthropic principle. The proposed solution puts an upper limit on the growth of civilizations that is independent of resource availability or biological factors. https://arxiv.org/abs/1903.11599

AstroAlert: NASA needs YOU! NASA is looking for citizen scientists to help collect data, through the GLOBE Observer app, for the ICESat-2 satellite, which was launched in September 2018. An instrument onboard called ATLAS fires 10,000 laser pulses at the Earth’s surface every second to measure the heights of trees, land features and sea elevation at any location on our planet by recording how long it takes these pulses of light to reflect back to the satellite. The goal is to use this information to monitor the health of the world’s forests, the impact of global warming on glaciers, and the rate at which sea levels are rising. https://lowell.edu/astroalert-nasa-needs-you/

Why the Moon makes us all romantics - For centuries, the Moon has been a source of fascination and inspiration for artists. To mark 50 years since man first stepped on the lunar surface, New York's Hudson River Museum is showing the impact our softly glowing neighbour has had on American art.The BBC went on a tour with chief curator Laura Vookles. Apr 01, 2019 - DecodeHer : Women heroes in science and cryptography - They were pioneers in their fields, yet their names are scarcely known – because they didn’t have a Y chromosome. We examine the accomplishments of two women who pioneered code breaking and astronomy during the early years of the twentieth century and did so in the face of social opprobrium and a frequently hostile work environment. http://radio.seti.org/episodes/decodeher http://traffic.libsyn.com/arewealone/BiPiSci19-04-01.mp3

Apr 15, 2019 - Free Range Dinosaurs: When dinosaurs ruled | (repeat) Dinosaurs are once again stomping and snorting their way across the screen of your local movie theater. But these beefy beasts stole the show long before CGI brought them back in the Jurassic Park blockbusters. Dinosaurs had global dominance for the better part of 165 million years. Compare that with a measly 56 million years of primate activity. We bow to our evolutionary overlords in this episode. Our conversation about these thunderous lizards roams freely as we talk with the paleontologist who discovered Dreadnoughtus – the largest land lizard unearthed to date. Kenneth Lacovara asks that we please stop using the term “dinosaur” to refer to something outmoded, when in fact the dinos were among the most well-adapted, long-lived creatures ever. Plus, intriguing dino facts: if you like eating chicken, you like eating dinosaurs, and how T-Rex’s puny arms helped him survive. Also, with dozens of new species unearthed every year – nearly one a week – why we’ve entered the golden age of dinosaur discovery. Guest: Kenneth Lacovara – Paleontologist who unearthed the largest land dinosaur known: Dreadnoughtus. He is also founding dean of the School of Earth and Environment at Rowan University, director of the Jean and Ric Edelman Fossil Park, and author of “Why Dinosaurs Matter.” (Originally aired June 25, 2018) http://traffic.libsyn.com/arewealone/BiPiSci19-04-15.mp3

Networks of cameras are making it easier to track meteors - and also to find the bits that reach the ground. "To gauge a projectile’s destructive power, one must know its speed. A team at the University of Western Ontario, in Canada, clocks meteors smaller than grains of sand. Using high-frequency radar, the team fires pulses into the sky 500 times a second, day and night. These detect not meteors themselves, but rather the trails of ions, generated by friction within the air, that they leave behind. The radar sees this as a “giant wire in the sky”, says Peter Brown, the team leader. An array of microphones sensitive enough to measure shock waves from meteors a centimetre or more across provides additional data. Dr Brown puts the average speed of such shooting stars at about 20km a second—significantly faster than many had thought. That is bad news for satellites. But if the various meteor-monitoring networks around the world can help improve the forecasting of peak meteoric activity, then the number of spacecraft suddenly found to be in peril will be reduced." https://www.economist.com/science-and-technology/2019/03/30/networks-of-cameras-are-making-it-easier-to-track-meteors
