“ Men and Women wanted for a hazardous distributed computing Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. Low wages, bitter false positives, long hours of data crunching, overheating CPU's and GPUs. Safe return doubtful without caffeinated beverages. Honour and recognition in event of technosignal detection.” – ErnestShackleton@setiathome.berkeley.edu
SETI@home is back up (7 Mar 2019) - "Hopefully there won't be any further problem. Our attempt to upgrade the memory on Oscar (the BOINC database machine) and Carolyn (the replica database) took a bit of DIMM swapping to find pairs of DIMMs that worked. Carolyn is still short two DIMMs (32 GB), but we didn't want to extend the outage any further to try to get it up to the full 192 GB. We might try to max out Carolyn during the outage next week. [edit]And as is usual after a long outage, we've got a large number of hosts out there starving for work. It'll take a little while before "no work" messages start to get less frequent.[/edit] 7 Mar 2019, 0:51:29 UTC https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=83989&postid=1983711 https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_server_status.php
It is in our nature to explore, to reach out into the unknown. The only true failure would be not to explore at all.” -- Sir Ernest Shackleton (Feb. 15, 1874 - Jan. 5, 1922)

(Previous status update) Long Outage this Week: "SETI@home will have an extended outage this week. The database backup is taking much longer than usual. This may be caused by the errors we're seeing with our memory upgrade. We will be looking into the memory errors wednesday morning (March 6). The projects may be down until after this work is done." PAPER - BOINC: A Platform for Volunteer Computing - David P. Anderson (Submitted on 5 Mar 2019) "Volunteer computing" is the use of consumer digital devices for high-throughput scientific computing. It can provide large computing capacity at low cost, but presents challenges due to device heterogeneity, unreliability, and churn. BOINC, a widely-used open-source middleware system for volunteer computing, addresses these challenges. We describe its features, architecture, and implementation." https://arxiv.org/abs/1903.01699

Fifty years ago today, astronaut Rusty Schweickart had 5 minutes alone above the Earth. 2019 is the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 9 mission, crewed by Jim McDivitt, Doug Scott, and B612 co-founder Rusty Schweickart. There will be many celebrations of the mission. Some were this past Sunday on March 3rd, the 50th anniversary of the mission’s launch. Some will be on March 13th, the 50th anniversary of its landing. But here at B612 we want to celebrate the day Rusty had a life-changing experience that ultimately led to his founding of the B612 Foundation. It started with a mistake. https://b612foundation.org/50-years-ago-rusty-schweickart-had-5-minutes-alone/

“The key to SETI is to guess the type of communication that an alien society would use. The best guesses so far have been that they would use radio waves, and that they would choose a frequency based on ‘universal’ knowledge—for instance, the 1420 MHz hydrogen frequency. But these are assumptions formulated by the human brain. Who knows what sort of logic a superadvanced nonhuman life form might use? … Just 150 years ago, an eyeblink in history, radio waves themselves were inconceivable, and we were thinking of lighting fires to signal the Martians. “ — David E. Fisher  https://spacequotations.com/quotes-about-aliens/
