SETI@home & Science Links on IRC 2019/08/30

⌁ Weekly Outage and Initial Catch Up: "Every Tuesday SETI@home begins a five hour data distribution outage for database and systems maintenance. The upload/download servers will be offline during this time. Afterwards you may experience connectivity issues for several more hours as the servers catch up with demand." https://setiathome.berkeley.edu

⌁ To alleviate the load on the SETI@home servers during Ttuesday's maintenance outages and to give regular users the chance to replenish their work unit caches, the operators of high throughput hosts can set BOINC to temporarily stop polling data servers on this specific day. https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=84048&postid=1986061

Dan Werthimer wins the 2019 Carl Sagan Prize for Science Popularization https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=84579#2009250 http://wonderfest.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/SaganPrize2019-release.pdf http://wonderfest.org/sagan-prize/ Werthimer is the Chief Scientist at the Berkeley SETI Research Center (BSRC). BSRC conducts experiments searching for electromagnetic signatures of hypothetical intelligent extraterrestrial civilizations. Affiliated with the University of California at Berkeley, BSRC may be best known for its SETI@home volunteer computing software and for its10-year, $100-million Breaththrough Listen project.
